"The Rudolphs" - Theresa, John and Kathleen
Photographer: Lindsay Lozon

| I've known the Rudolph family since I was a "symphony brat", when I'd hang backstage at the Vancouver Symphony concerts as a kid; Kathleen and John were in the VSO, then. Theresa wasn't born yet! Kathleen teaches at the Glenn Gould School and Royal Conservatory of Music; John is Principal Percussion of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Theresa plays in the viola section of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and is Assistant Principal Viola of the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. It was an honour styling this amazing family.

| "Make love to the camera." If anyone knows how to do this, it's pianist Nastasia Zibrat. She showed up fresh-faced with straight hair, no makeup, jeans and a T-shirt - and it was AMAZING to watch her come alive as the "processing" began. I've never seen someone pose so naturally, who at times bore an uncanny resemblance to Marilyn Monroe. When we were setting up a shot, I gasped when I looked in the mirror - and saw her silhoutte in perfect profile. I asked Arthur (a remarkable young photographer) to get the shot. I asked for lots of space to allow for text for a possible poster. Nastasia looks ready to play for Chopin himself. |
ROBERT TEEHAN, tuba player

I loved working with composer and tuba player Rob Teehan. He made the choice to polish his image once he got serious about his career as an award-winning composer and busy tuba player. Here are some of the best pics highlighting him with his instruments. Great pictures lead to great placement in the press!

NANCY DAHN, Violinist & TIMOTHY STEEVES, pianist
Photography: Lindsay Lozon
Hair & Makeup: Paul Langill
Wardrobe (formal outfits for Nancy): Rosemarie Umetsu |
  |
  |
| Violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves are Memorial University music professors with whom I had a great deal of fun styling this shoot. They were so committed to this project. Nancy spent countless hours trying on outfits and sending me pictures from St. John's to ensure I'd approve (the formal outfits are Rosemarie Umetsu designs). I had a bad cold that day and spent the whole shoot schlepping a box of Kleenex and honking like a car horn. |
Joaquin Valdepeñas, clarinetist

Joaquin Valdepeñas is the TSO’s amazing Principal Clarinetist and 2009/2010 marks his 30th anniversary with the Orchestra. I’ve always loved his playing and to top it off this man has the BEST clothes and sense of style. www.JoaquinValdepeñas.com |
LILY LING, pianist
Photographer: Tara McMullen
Hair & Makeup: Paul Langill
Wardrobe: Rosemarie Umetsu |

 |
Lily Ling is a SCREAM - a tour-de-force who’s destined for great things.
She’s a Musical Director/Collaborative Pianist bursting with talent and ideas. Since her musical worlds are either flamboyant or conservative, I reflected both in her shoot. |
JULIE SPRING, harpist
Photographer: Lindsay Lozon |
 |
 |
Julie Spring won the TSO Principal Harp position starting in the 2008/2009 season. While string players worry about finding and guarding a great instrument, and pianists must deal with whatever’s at the venue, harpists have the worst of both worlds – having to schlep their huge instrument, and keep it warm! www.JulieSpring.com |

I departed from musicians to style my friend Aliza’s photo shoot. She works with clients inside and out: she teaches fitness classes and sells Aloette Cosmetics. Isn’t she beautiful? www.AlizaBlair.com |
LAURA WHALEN, soprano

I loved styling soprano Laura Whalen. We went
shopping, I selected her outfits, lent her my accessories, and grabbed a bouquet of dark
pink roses for this shoot. The photo shoot is as good as the subject, and Laura was
open-minded, fearless, and fierce. She tried everything. We both climbed up onto the
pier with a small ladder held in the water - except that she did it in that gown. I
suggested she sing so her expressions looked "real", and wow - her voice carried
right over the lake. Beautiful!

| Let's turn the deeply kind-spirited Susan Hoeppner,
flutist, into an Egyptian, turning her flutes into a crook and sceptre. |
JOHN WONG, percussionist
Photography: Lindsay Lozon |
 |
 |
| John Wong is a percussionist whose star is on the rise. I
loved directing this shoot because percussion instruments lend themselves to playfulness.
He was such a good sport about all the jumping I wanted for these shots. I was especially
taken by the shot of him leaping sideways with the cowbell (it is not a cheese grater)
because his pose suggests he's riding a broom (or a Nimbus 2000 for you Harry Potter
fans). |
TENG LI, violist
Photography: Lindsay Lozon |
 |
| Teng Li is the Principal Violist with the TSO, and won the
position in her early 20s. I suggested she do a photo shoot to reflect her new role as a
musical leader and her new-found sophistication as a mature, young woman. Now, I can't
keep up with her, fashion-wise. |
LYNNE McMURTRY, mezzo-soprano

I loved stying mezzo soprano Lynne for this shoot, because
I always knew she was beautiful,
and now I think she finally believes me.

TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian & the
Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Photography: Cylla von Tiedemann |
 |
 |
| Directing the TSO photo shoots with Music Director Peter
Oundjian was a great joy for me. I was standing on the mezzanine shouting directions and
it was an uncanny feeling when the orchestra complied. (It was a real power trip.) I asked
for shots of Peter standing off the podium so if this image was ever a house programme
centrefold, a staple would not land in Peter's face. I learned this the hard way from my
Vancouver Symphony photo shoot years prior. |
|

When I booked photographer Tara McMullen, it was partly for my website,
and partly to demonstrate to new clients some ideas for their own photo shoots. To throw
caution to the wind, risk looking idiotic, and try poses that feel uncomfortable. I got my
hair done (a must for photography), channelled my "inner model" to get over
curious onlookers, and performed for the camera. As a former classical pianist, I wanted
to pose with my instrument. The pic of me playing the piano includes a background photo my
brother Jackie took when I was seven, mimicking Janis Joplin. And while it felt vaguely
blasphemous to place my shoe on the keys, I'm glad I experimented. It looks cool, like
something a jazz singer & pianist may use for an album back cover. It amazes me how
shy some musicians are about photography, yet bare their souls all the time on stage. I'd
rather spoon my eyes out than perform in front of thousands, which is why I focussed on
PR.
Tara is a gifted photographer and I'm glad I found her. She's gentle,
collaborative, and puts you at ease. www.taramcmullen.com |
